#SmilingIslanderTravels

Cooking has always been my passion, but it took a little bit of travelling around the world to know so. As a cabin crew with an airline, I travelled quite a bit and this fuelled my passion for food.

Kenya

Kenya is the epitome of hospitality. I am so honored to be part of a non-profit called Alabaster International, which takes volunteers to Kenya each year to serve in urban and rural communities. I’ve been volunteering with Alabaster for 10 years and my Maasai friends in Kenya teach me every year about some of their traditional food – goat stew, charred meat – aka “Nyama Choma” and tomato rice. Our hearts and stomachs are full each time because of their hospitality! Check out Alabaster International’s work here

Hawaii

My wife and I have been traveling to Hawaii for the last few years to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we are hooked! Our favorite island by far is Kauai known for its nature, authenticity, and amazing food! Their poke is truly amazing and interestingly the best kinds are found in local supermarkets. I review some of my favorites here.

Anacapa Island

Anacapa Island is a unique and remote island in California about 2 hours off the coast of Ventura. It’s windy, usually kinda cloudy and in certain seasons a breeding season for thousands of sea gulls. It’s a fun day trip and a chance to get out on the water and see some dolphins or whales on the way too! Check it out!

Idyllwild

Idyllwild is a quaint little town 2 hours from LA nestled in the mountains under beautiful pine trees. Full of cabins, fireplaces, friendly people and great nature trails, our dog Nuru loves to travel with us here to enjoy the fresh and cool mountain air. Get a glimpse of Nuru and our time there together here!

South Sudan & Ethiopia

I had the privilege of volunteering with Alabaster International in South Sudan and Ethiopia in 2023.

South Sudan is rich in history and although continues to face conflict and flooding, has an amazing food culture – fresh fish, Indian fusion food and fresh Mandazi (similar to a donut).

Ethiopia is a beautiful nation with a fusion of African and Arabic influences reflected in their cuisine. It was an incredible experience being in Ethiopia’s capital city Addis Ababa and experiencing Ethiopian culture thru their food.
